In 2017, I joined my current organization weighing 65 kg and I was never much concerned about my weight. However, with the advancement of my career to a management role and the arrival of my son Atticus, my weight climbed 10kg, which I still didn't take much notice. I was working out occasionally at the gym, so I lied to myself I was probably putting on muscle. Trust me, it was not muscle.
With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and the stress work brought, I started drinking at home to help take the edge off. By 2022, I weighed 79 kg, with the arrival of my second child, Alexis. that's 14kg in 5 years. And all fat.
It was at this point that I realized the importance of my health and well-being. At 36 years old, with two young children, I realized that I wanted to be there for them for as long as possible. I didn't want to be in my mid-fifties, unable to keep up with my growing family. That was when I came across the concept of intermittent fasting and its benefits.
Intermittent fasting is a method of eating where you alternate periods of fasting with periods of eating. The idea is that by limiting the amount of time you spend eating, you can improve your overall health and well-being. I took on the 16/8 method. That's 16 hours fast between 8pm to 12pm next day. No food in between, except for 0 calorie drinks such as coffee and tea, to help curb the appetite.
By reducing the amount of time you spend eating, you reduce the number of calories you consume, which leads to weight loss. Another benefit is improved insulin sensitivity, which can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
In addition to these health benefits, I experience mental clarity and increase energy levels in the mornings. And there we thought we couldn't live without breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Not True at all! That heavy meal can actually cause brain fog and fatigue. Another important benefit of intermittent fasting is the process of autophagy.
Autophagy is a natural process in which the body cleanses itself of damaged cells and debris. This process is enhanced during periods of fasting, which can slow down aging, improve overall health, boosting our immune system and improve brain function.
In my personal experience, incorporating intermittent fasting into my daily routine has made a significant difference in my health and well-being. I have lost weight and I feel more energetic and focused throughout the day.
Where am I now you might ask. I've lost 8kg in 4 months. In conclusion, if you're looking for a way to lose weight, improve your health and well-being, I highly recommend trying intermittent fasting. It has been a game-changer for me and I hope it can be for you as well. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new diet or exercise program.
